NYLT - Youth Participant Selection

NYLT is a training course. Please only send Boy Scouts/Venturers/Sea Scouts considered mature enough so that they can come back to your unit and fulfill a meaningful leadership position.

Do send:

  • Scouts/Venturers that you expect to take on a leadership position in your Troop/Crew.
  • Mature Scouts/Venturers; sometimes having a Scout/Venturer wait a year before going to NYLT is better for him and the Troop/Crew.
  • Scouts/Venturers that will be a credit to your Troop/Crew.

Do not send:

  • Scouts/Venturers that you need to keep an eye on while out on your troop outings.
  • Scouts/Venturers that have not had at least one year of summer camp.
  • Scouts/Venturers that do not want to go.
  • Your trouble-maker in hopes that NYLT will fix him/her in a week.

What is expected

Coming out of NYLT, the Scouts/Venturers should have some ideas on how to make their Troop/Crew better. These need to be agreed upon by both the Scoutmaster/Advisor/Skipper and the Scout/Venturer. During the course, the youth will have formed a list of goals to complete, called a Personal Vision Challenge.

Note - The Scout/Venturer is considered to have completed the course after the graduation ceremony. The Challenge is an additional step the Scout/Venturer can complete for additional recognition.

We encourage Scoutmasters/Advisors to work with their NYLT trained youth to have their goals completed between August and November. When the youth has completed his/her Personal Challenge, the youth or Scoutmaster/ Advisor should e-mail NYLT at info@nfcnylt.org and state what the Scout/Venturer has done to demonstrate leadership and completion of the Personal Challenge. At this time we will make arrangements for presentation of the Challenge Completion neckerchief at a troop meeting or Court of Honor. This is a very special and important advanced recognition, and our Youth Staff do a fantastic job at making it a memorable event. Please give adequate time for our staff to make appropriate arrangements to be available at your next Court of Honor. (see more information at Advanced Leadership: Personal Challenge tab)
